Object type: Commercial building (heritage site)
Location: Lithuania
Total area: ~200 m²
Equipment: “IGLU” air-to-water heat pump (hybrid system retaining the existing pellet boiler)
Heating method: Heating system adapted for hybrid operation
Partner / Installer: UAB Santenora
Challenge: Expensive fuel type and the need to reduce heating costs while keeping a backup heat source
In a 200 m² administrative building that once served as a manor official’s house, the owners faced drastically increased heating costs. The building used a pellet boiler, but with pellet prices rising significantly, there was a need to find a much cheaper, more convenient, and more modern heating method.
The building owners aimed to reduce daily heating expenses but wanted to keep the existing pellet boiler as a backup heat source for emergencies or when needed.
Solution: IGLU hybrid system with a pellet boiler
To ensure economical day-to-day heating and flexibility, a hybrid solution was installed at the site: an “IGLU” air-to-water heat pump was installed to serve as a cheaper alternative to the pellet boiler, while in the event of power or other outages it can be switched over to the pellet boiler.
- Primary heat source: A high-efficiency IGLU air-to-water heat pump is used for everyday heating and domestic hot water, ensuring stable temperatures and minimal electricity consumption.
- Backup system retained: A pellet boiler has been kept as an auxiliary (backup) heat source that can be activated during severe frosts or to save electricity during peak periods.
- Flexible control: Smart control logic makes it easy to switch between or combine both heat sources, achieving the optimal balance between comfort and operating costs.
Engineering handover and results
After full system installation, commissioning, and start-up, the site was successfully adapted for efficient hybrid operation.
Key project outcomes:
- Reduced heating costs: With the IGLU heat pump as the primary heat source, the building’s heating expenses have dropped significantly compared to heating with pellets alone.
- Maximum comfort: The heat pump operates automatically, so there’s no longer any need for constant fuel loading or boiler maintenance.
- Energy security: Double reliability is ensured—the independent backup system provides complete peace of mind even in the event of unexpected power grid or weather changes.
Key figures and facts:
- Building area: ~200 m²
- Building type: Commercial
- Equipment: “IGLU” air-to-water heat pump
